Solar Eclipse Day 2026
On 12 August 2026, Ettelbruck becomes the gathering point for a major public science experience built around a deep partial solar eclipse, safe solar observation, family workshops, live explanations, partner activities and an evening under the Perseid meteor shower. The locally visible phase will be observed safely on site, while the peak of the eclipse will be followed by livestream on screens.
What is happening in Ettelbruck?
Nightwise and Université Populaire Luxembourg are the organisers of Solar Eclipse Day 2026, with the Luxembourg Science Center and Luxembourg Researchers Hub as main partners, Eldoradio as presenter, and with the support of The City of Ettelbruck. Together, the event is being developed as a free public astronomy and science experience at Hall du Deich. The eclipse is the central moment, but the event is broader: a shared afternoon and evening of science, observation, creativity, sustainability and community engagement.
Visitors will be able to learn what a solar eclipse is, observe the locally visible phase safely through supervised methods, follow the eclipse peak by livestream on screens, take part in activities, meet organisations and continue into the evening with astronomy, Perseids, telescopes and dark-sky awareness.
Protect your eyes Before you look up
Even when almost 90% of the Sun is covered, the remaining crescent is still bright enough to cause permanent retinal damage. Safe observation begins before you turn towards the Sun and ends only after you have turned away again.

Three steps every time
These steps apply every single time you take a look, even if it is only for a second. Explain the sequence to children before the eclipse begins and supervise them throughout.

Check your viewer
Hold eclipse glasses or a handheld solar viewer towards a bright indoor lamp and inspect the filter before use. If it is scratched, punctured, torn, loose or otherwise damaged, discard it.

Protection on first
Stand still and put on your eclipse glasses, or place the handheld viewer fully in front of your eyes, before turning towards the Sun.

Turn away first
When you have finished looking, turn your face completely away from the Sun. Only then should you remove the glasses or lower the viewer.
Use the right protection
Use purpose-built eclipse glasses or a handheld solar viewer. It should comply with ISO 12312-2 and come from a reliable manufacturer or supplier. A printed ISO mark alone does not prove that a product is genuine.
Sunglasses or DIY filters
Ordinary sunglasses are unsafe, however dark they appear. Never use smoked glass, exposed photographic film, CDs, homemade filters or other improvised materials.
Filter every lens at the front
Binoculars, telescopes and camera lenses concentrate sunlight. A suitable solar filter must be secured over the front of every objective lens. Never look through an optical instrument while wearing eclipse glasses, and use solar equipment only with expert guidance.
Explain then supervise
Show children the viewing sequence before the event, make sure their glasses fit and remain beside them whenever they use a solar viewer. Never assume that a child already understands the risk.
Look at the projection
With your back to the Sun, use a pinhole, colander or gaps between leaves to project the solar image onto another surface. Look at the projected image, never through the hole.
Take vision changes seriously
Solar retinal injury may not hurt immediately. If blurred or distorted vision, unusual central greying or a dark spot appears after viewing the Sun, seek prompt advice from an eye-care professional.

Even if direct visibility is reduced, the programme can retain strong educational value through workshops, live explanations, mediated eclipse content, screen-based support and flexible evening activities if conditions improve later.
