Nightwise WiseWalk
Walk into the night
A guided evening walk where the landscape becomes an observatory. Learn to read the sky, observe stars and galaxies, photograph the Milky Way with your phone and discover how artificial light changes the night around us.
A slow journey from the illuminated world into the natural night — part guided sky tour, part outdoor science experience and part conversation about how we can protect darkness.
Look up. Look around
The sky tells only half the story
WiseWalks connect astronomy with the environment beneath it. As daylight fades, we learn how to orient ourselves in the sky and use simple observing tools — but we also pay attention to the lamps, shadows and bright horizons that shape what remains visible.
The aim is not simply to name stars. It is to understand the night as a shared environment: beautiful, scientifically rich and worth protecting.
Let your eyes adjust
We begin near the station and gradually leave brighter streets behind. The changing view makes dark adaptation something you experience directly, not just a concept you hear about.
Learn the sky
With two guides, the group learns to identify key directions, recognise patterns and understand what is visible above Mersch that evening.
See beyond the naked eye
Binoculars and a digital telescope reveal details that our eyes alone can miss, turning faint points and patches of light into real astronomical objects.
Understand light pollution
We compare brighter and darker parts of the route and explore how unnecessary artificial light affects our view of the universe, wildlife and the character of the night landscape.
Why Mersch?
A central place to meet the night
At Luxembourg’s geographical centre, Mersch is easy to reach by train yet opens quickly towards the Alzette valley, fields and the quieter northern edge of town. Our route begins at Mersch station and heads towards Pettingen before returning.
That gradual transition matters. Moving from the illuminated centre towards darker surroundings makes the effects of artificial light visible in real time — while the open landscape gives us room to stop, look up and observe together.
Mersch is not merely the meeting place. Its changing night landscape is part of the experience.
